Job Summary:
The Journeyman Bus Mechanic performs preventative maintenance,
safety inspections, I/M inspections, maintenance, diagnosis, and
repair on all aspects on a fleet of nearly 200 school buses. The
incumbent assures that all buses meet federal, state, and local
standards. The incumbent also assists in training drivers on
pre/post trip inspections and operation of buses and assures the
continuity of shop production and efficient workflow in the absence
of foreman/lead mechanic. The incumbent is required to provide
their own tools sufficient to perform assigned duties.
Essential Functions:
- Performs maintenance and repair on school bus fleet.
- Performs Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMI's).
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs engine components,
emissions systems, air brake, automatic transmissions, drive train,
electrical, electronic systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems,
steering, exhaust, wheelchair lifts, and special needs
transportation equipment.
- Performs modifications to buses as directed.
- Performs state inspections.
- Performs Salt Lake County emissions testing.
- Performs cutting and welding as necessary.
- Designs and fabricates specialty and other equipment as
directed.
- Performs minor body repairs.
- Orders and picks up parts and other items needed for specific
jobs.
- Completes necessary reports and documents for maintenance
records.
- Responsible for shop cleanliness and maintaining OSHA
standards.
- Assists drivers in understanding pre/post trip inspections and
operation of buses and school bus standards.
- Shift work required.
- In rare cirumstances, transports students in the event of a
driver shortage.
- Follows State procurement and district accounting procedures
when using district assigned purchasing card. Non-essential

- Other duties as assigned Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of appropriate hand and power tools, measuring
devices, and testing equipment unique to school bus maintenance
(e.g. Cummins Insite, Quickserve, Caterpillar ET, and SIS Web) and
Allison Transmission and Bendix ABS diagnostic tools and
software.
- Proficient in Cummins Insite and Quickserve programs.
- Proficient in Caterpillar ET and SIS Web programs.
- Knowledge of Bendix Air Brake and Allison Automatic
Transmission diagnostic software programs.
- Ability to understand and diagnose diesel engine emission
control systems.
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Possess strong computer skills (Windows, Excel, Email,
etc.)
- Ability to work independently with little direct
supervision.
- Skills in welding (MIG and/or Arc) and cutting (Oxy/Acetylene
and/or plasma).
- Strong decision-making skills regarding the best interest of
Granite School District and the Transportation department.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety work standards.
- Skill in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Education, Training and Qualifications:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with
school bus endorsement or willingness to obtain such a license.
- The district will provide training if necessary.
- Applicant must have a minimum of a class D driver's license at
time of hire.
- Requires a Salt Lake County I/M License or willingness to
obtain such a license.
- Utah State Inspection License with Full Facility School Bus
certification or willingness to obtain such a license.
- College education in heavy diesel maintenance technology is
preferred. Required Prior Experience:
- Requires a minimum of two (2) years of successful experience in
in heavy diesel maintenance and repair. Note: The District reserves
the right to make specific requirements for this position, however,
when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly
pertinent, some exchanges between training and experience might be
authorized.
Assigned Decision Making:
- Makes educated and informed decisions regarding school bus
maintenance and repair.
- Determines repairs, replacement, and maintenance for safe and
efficient operation of school buses.
- Determines tools, equipment, and materials required for each
job.
- Determines safe and effective approaches to needed repairs and
maintenance. Non-Supervisory Interaction:
- Interacts and communicates effectively with co-workers,
drivers, office staff, administrators, vendors, students, parents,
the general public, and school staff. Supervisory Responsibility:
- May supervise the work of apprentices and other helpers. Budget

- Not applicable Working Environment:
- Work takes place in a typical shop environment including hot,
cold, loud, dirty, greasy, and oily environments.
- Work may take place outside in various weather conditions,
including snow and ice, rain, extreme heat and cold conditions, and
wind.
- Service call work may take place in parking lots, bus zones,
shoulder of road, and other potentially dangerous locations.
- Requires long periods of time on feet on concrete floors or at
workstations.
- Requires rotational on-call assignments, some district
emergencies may require additional irregular hours.
- Frequent interruptions of work requiring accuracy and
concentration.
- Incumbent may have occasional stress from emergencies and in
meeting project deadlines. Physical Demands:
