Purposes

The Software Development Engineer 4 is responsible for cloud systems, on-prem infrastructure and services needed to bridge cloud and on-prem architecture. This advanced professional-level position is responsible for developing technical designs, developing and maintaining software source code to support a solution. As an experienced member of a development team, general work direction will be given, and the individual will be expected to solve complex technical issues and complete programming tasks. This position may be asked to play the role of a technical lead on projects or solutions whose complexity or scope is moderate.

This engineer will work directly with church departments and solution teams to help engineer cloud solutions in alignment with organizational cloud standards. This position is a customer facing role that will interface with one or more department teams, such as: missionary, temple, priesthood, churchofjesuschrist.org, comeuntochrist.org, etc. This person will translate the cloud strategy and architecture into a highly available and secure technical implementation in accordance with industry best practices.

This position will work closely with the core cloud platforms team to define and advocate enterprise cloud standards, processes, and DevOps methodologies to development teams. This person will help build, deploy, and provide engineering services that leverage AWS or Azure cloud technologies. This person will guide solution teams to best practice cloud development. They will receive assignments from a solutions manager or product manager.

This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide significant input and direction to strategic plans and product roadmaps with a focus on cloud products

  • Code APIs to work with cloud systems and when required to help bridge on-prem systems and applications with the cloud

  • Code applications designed to work with or enhance features offered by cloud platforms

  • Translate architectural requirements into PaaS and serverless solutions

  • Deploy, manage, and operate scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems

  • Implement and control data flow to and from cloud service providers

  • Design measures to protect cloud systems from security compromise and to keep the system safe

  • Respond to escalated incidents and engage vendors as necessary. Identify, track and resolve associated problems

  • Adhere to all security guidelines and that systems are properly protected with working backups; ensure all others with access are doing the same

  • Perform general research to evaluate a range of product offerings and evaluate emerging trends

  • Identify and document technical application, architectures and requirements

  • Participate in the design and implementation of supporting systems and infrastructure

  • Train other team members on the use of the cloud systems and infrastructure. Keep training material up to date

  • Contribute to and perform analysis of functional requirements

  • Participate in vendor or technology evaluations and identify critical gaps in their offerings

  • Participate in the formulation of technical recommendations

  • Act as a technical lead, if assigned; mentor less-senior developers

  • Create technical designs mapped to functional requirements

  • Provide estimates for development tasks

  • Design, develop, and test code for software development projects

  • Participate in code reviews

  • Develop technical documentation

  • Participate in the Problem Management process and fix defects

  • Contribute to the design, and implementation, and measures required to protect solutions from security compromise

  • Comply with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements and ensure all others are doing the same

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience

  • Cloud Certified Engineer - Associate or Solutions Architect or equivalent professional experience

Work Experience:

  • 6+ years of progressive relevant professional experience

  • 3+ years of public or private cloud computing and development experience

  • Experience with AWS or Azure

  • Experience with PaaS systems such as Cloud Foundry, Kubernetes, Fargate, App Service, etc.

Demonstrated Skills & Abilities:

  • Solid understanding of core cloud technologies and tool

  • Must be familiar with DevSecOps, Scrum, and ITIL concepts, and have operational understanding and discipline

  • Experience with complex, large-scale systems is preferred including strong experience in the tools, methodologies, and technologies the role supports

  • Must have a solid base of learning and some experience in all the primary areas of an n-tier enterprise system that may or may not be web based, e.g. interface domain logic and database layers

  • Must be able to communicate clearly both orally and written

  • Ability to mentor and train her or his peers

  • Exceptional troubleshooter with the ability to solve problems in a timely manner under pressure

  • Strong skills in engineering/programming, analytical/diagnostic/troubleshooting, web technology, and programming methodology

  • Must have a basic understanding of systems and subsystems

  • Experience engineering solutions in public, private and hybrid cloud platforms

  • Advanced knowledge of applicable software, computer languages, and code to perform the responsibilities of the role

  • This job operates in a professional office environment

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
